Further details
The carving is in the style of Paul Johann Hess who carved pastoral subjects which often included imaginary ruins in similar composition. The technique of carving ivory miniature scenes was also popular in France in the 18th century with work shops in Dieppe producing pieces in the Neo Classical style. The blue background was produced by using a blue pigment of pulverized cobolt glass which was applied by brush.

Cf. B. Chadour, op. cit. vol I, no. 986, for similar example, also Elfenbein Kunst, P.W. Hartmann, Wien, 1999, for further information on Johann Hess and other sculptors of ivory
