Lot Essay

"A new body of work in this exhibition which engages with aboriginal art is the Atelier series. It quotes from the white on black linear series of works related to Emily Kngawarreye's big Yam Dreaming 1995 in the collection of the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne. While Kngwarreye's majestical painting relates to the life-cycle and pattern of growth of the yam, my interest in it apart from its stunning beauty was that her image with its network of tangled lines and wildly unpredictable trajectories seemed like an analogue for the complex network of connections within my Canvasboard System. I am keen to develop this kind of image further not only as a picture (or map) of the Canvasboard System but also because it resonates with the recent work of American painter Brice Marden and is suggestive of the latest developments in scientific research into sub-atomic reality - namely String Theory." (I Tillers, Imants Tillers - ACAF 02, Span Galleries, exh. cat. Melbourne, 2002)
