The idea of the Souscription watch was first conceived in 1794 during the French Revolution as a method Abraham Louis Breguet to remain stable financially. After making a deposit on an order, a client would wait for his timepiece and complete payment upon receipt.

In its present form, Breguet first manufactured the Souscription set for the Hapsburg/Antiquorum sale, The Art of Breguet in 1999. The pocket watch accompanying the set is a replication of Breguet's Perpetuelle watch of 1791.
