Lot Essay

The present drawing is close to several of the many drawings for the many paintings, especially the prime version in the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool (see W. Baron, Sickert, London, 1973, pls. 44, 45). Like the Walker painting, and unlike some later versions, this drawing does not include a stretch of the ceiling with the lattice work section.
