Lot Essay

Following the success of Brighton Aquatints which John Piper published in 1939, he started work on a sequel, focussing on the eighteenth-century mansion of Stowe, Buckinghamshire.
The present picture shows the house from the south side, and the artist made an aquatint of the same view (see R. and J. Piper, Piper's Places, London, 1983, no. 44).
