Lot Essay

The present work is a lateral composition in which Lowry builds the layers; the foreground features people moving backwards and forewards across the picture plane with, unusually for Lowry, the centre two people interracting. The middle foreground includes the artist's iconic red lamp post drawing the viewer further into the picture and the background shows a hazy industrial scene, the smoke from the chimney creating a blurred effect in sharp contrast to the stronger colours of the foreground.
