Frink had a long preoccupation with the themes of birdmen and winged figures, in discussion with Edward Lucie-Smith she comments, 'People find it tempting to say that my birdmen stemmed from the Icarus legend, but that's not really true either. They came much more from reading about an extraordinary Frenchman called Valentin, who used to jump out of aeroplanes wearing his own pair of wings' (E. Lucie-Smith and E. Frink, Frink a Portrait, Salisbury, 1994, p. 106).
