Paolozzi had a lifelong obsession with metamorphosing the human figure and by the mid 1980s he had created a series of fragmented heads which blended geometry with nature. 'By using the Surrealist technique of the cut he is able to explore expression beyound physiognomy' (R. Spencer, exhibition catalogue, Paolozzi Portraits, London, National Portrait Gallery, 1988, p. 16). He deconstructed and reconstructed the human head, the horizontal and vertical cuts filled with geometrical fragments suggesting mechanisation (see F. Pearson, exhibition catalogue, Paolozzi, Edinburgh, National Galleries of Scotland, 1999, p. 62).
