Callaly Castle, Northumberland, was occupied from the 13th century by the Clavering family, during which time the building was enlarged and extensively modified. The present building dates from the early 15th Century, incorporating the original pele tower, and was subsequently extended, including a magnificent saloon built in the mid-18th Century, possibly under the direction of James Paine who worked at nearby Alnwick Castle.
The estate was bought in 1877 by Major Alexander Browne who built a museum wing to accomodate the Forman Collection of Antiquities which he inherited from his uncle in 1890. This imposing cabinet stood for many years in the pele tower wing until the mid-1980's when it was bought by the current owner.
