John Henning the Elder (b.1771-d.1851), came to London in 1811, and was overwhelmed with admiration of the Elgin marbles, which were to become a source of great influence for him. Working for Josiah Wedgwood at the time, Henning embarked on a project of making models of the Parthenon and Phigaleian friezes. It took him twelve years to complete the reliefs, of which a number of small plaster copies were also made.
