Lot Essay

Around the turn of the twentieth century numerous tobacco companies eager to win brand loyalty with their consumers began to insert premiums in their tobacco product packaging. Interestingly enough many of these premiums were silk or flannel patches printed with a variety of subjects and included instructions on how to combine them into decorative funshishings such as pillows and quilts, thus the term tobacco quilt arises. This specific type of premium fell out of fashion shortly before World War I.
