VASE POLYCHROME
Panama, Tonosi, env. 400-500 après J.C.
Vase à panse globulaire et à petit col aux bords retroussés, dont la anse est en forme de lézard dressé se tenant aux bordures extérieures par les pattes et dont la queue est prolongée sur toute les parois du vase par une longue spirale marron. Le décor de la panse est constitué de nombreux motifs comprenant des ensembles de bandes groupées, des animaux qui pourraient être des oiseaux très stylisés aux pattes et à la crête rouges, ainsi que d'autres motifs géométriques indéterminés. Le fond du vase comporte une étonnante décoration rouge et marron géométrique et les bords du col sont ornés d'une frise de motifs enroulés et encadrés par une bande rouge. Engobe crème et couleurs marrons et rouges.

TONOSI POLYCHROME DUAL-SPOUTED VESSEL
CA. A.D. 400-500
Of globular form with a smaller effigy spout in the form of an upright lizard, the splayed legs and tail painted with a long undulating tail encompassing the vessel, with a standing long beaked bird within the folds surrounded by various motifs including a lined rectangular form possibly a bird trap, ovals possibly indicating turtle eggs, and stylized stars ; in deep brown and reddish-brown on the tan ground.
The iconography relates to indigenous myths concerning the shamans ability to obtain and dominate the avians, and the magical shamanic journey, symbolized in part by the dual opening of the vessel, which has further connotations to the female reproductive zone.
