Jaina, Classique final, env. 550-950 après J.C.
Statuette en terre cuite représentant un personnage masculin bossu âgé et assis les jambes croisées, portant une coupe à ses lèvres avec sa main droite et à la fine main gauche placée sous sa poitrine retombante, au visage réaliste souligné par des joues retombantes et un front ridé, et portant un pagne, un pectoral en coquillage et un turban enroulé. Légères traces de pigment blanc.
Hauteur: 10.2 cm.

MAYAN SEATED AGED MALE FIGURE
JAINA, LATE CLASSIC, CA. A.D. 550-950

The hunchback seated with legs crossed and holding a drinking cup to his lips, thin left hand grasping the projecting chest, the portrait-like face marked by sunken cheeks and furrowed brow, wearing loincloth, shell pectoral and coiled headband, with faint remains of white pigment.

Mayan lords sought the company and the advice of dwarves and hunchbacks, who were considered to be wise as well as entertaining. at times they were the king's closest and most trusted counselors, a concept probably based on religious belief, that the Maize God surrounded himself with such companions.

Les seigneurs mayas recherchaient la compagnie et les conseils des nains et des bossus qui étaient considérés comme étant érudits tout autant que divertissants. Ils étaient alors les conseillers les plus proches et les plus écoutés des souverains, probablement en raison d'une croyance religieuse où l'on évoque le Dieu du Maïs accompagné lui aussi par de tels compagnons.
