A tribute to Colonel Fred Bromaby: Conrad remembers in his sea-faring years hearing of Bromaby's death on his return from the East Indies: 'He was a loveable personality and, I am glad to say, an appreciated one ... I suppose you know that Lord Wolseley, a good judge of men, intended him to take command of the Metmneh column in succession to Sir H. Steward. The road to higher distinction lay open before him when he was struck down at Alem-Klea'.
