Lawrence reports on an inspection of his chest by a specialist, who 'listened to me ... could hear nothing in my lungs, said that must be cured -- now the bronchials ... -- He said that I shouldn't do any inhalations with hot air: that brings the bleeding back'; he is eating much better, though put off by the quantities of food provided at the Hotel Eden, and the eating habits of the other guests -- 'it frightens off my shy appetite'; the letter gives some social news, including a description of Max Mohr, 'interesting and good, but a last man [ein letzter Mann], who has come totally and utterly to the end of the road, and can no longer wander out in the wilderness, or take a step into the unknown ... I'm sending you the novelle -- too long for Jugend, but you could perhaps sell it elsewhere'.
