TENNYSON, Alfred, 1st Baron (1809-1892). Autograph manuscript verse, a fragment of a draft for the Idylls of the King, including numerous variants, n.p., n.d. [c.1871], 16 lines written on one leaf, 146 x 137mm, traces of pencil annotations to left margin (even browning to text, small loss to lower right corner, not affecting text, two punctures to upper margin).

The fragment is from close to the beginning of part II of the Idylls, 'Gareth and Lynette', and describes Gareth's initial spurning by Lynette, his clash with Kay, and his departure in pursuit of Lynette:
'To whom Sir Gareth drew
(And there was none but few goodlier than he)
Shining full-arm'd 'Damsel, the quest is mine
Lead on, I follow' ...

'... Have at thee then cried Kay: they shock'd & Kay
Fell, shoulderslipt & Gareth cried again
Lead, & I follow & fast away she fled'.

Apparently an early stage in composition: the draft varies in 11 of its 16 lines from the published version.
