EINSTEIN, Albert. Two autograph letters signed to his first wife, Mileva (the first also to their children), Bilbao and n.p., 27 May and 13 June 1925, together four pages, 4to.
CACTI FOR MILEVA, AND ATTEMPTS TO BURY THE HATCHET. Einstein's South American lecture tour is over -- 'praise the Lord' -- and he is on his way home, with a little basket of cacti for Mileva and butterflies for the children; the only problem is how to get them to Zurich. The letter continues with proposals for seeing the children, including a suggestion that Eduard come to Berlin: Einstein tries to sway Mileva from her veto on Eduard staying with Einstein and his second wife, Else, and adds 'It would be really nice if we could finally bury the hatchet [wenn das alte Kampfbeil einmal endgültig begraben würde]. This could for example be manifested by you accompanying him -- to which end I extend a friendly invitation'. The letter of 13 June gives further thought to transport of the cacti, and repeats the invitation for Mileva and Eduard to come to Berlin, as well as other holiday plans with Eduard. (2)
