PRINTED ON VELLUM. 8° (169 x 110mm). Gothic type, ILLUMINATED AND COLOURED BY A CONTEMPORARY HAND: 17 half-page metalcuts, 18 small cuts, half-page Hardouin device on title, metalcut anatomical man, liquid gold initials and paragraph marks on magenta or blue ground, red-ruled architectural frame to pages with large miniatures, ink-ruled frame with painted floral border on gold ground to other pages. (Small ink deletions on title, some smudges or light soiling, paint occasionally rubbed or flaked, a few leaves repaired at lower margin.) 19th-century red velvet, vellum endleaves, gilt edges (missing corner- and centerpieces, rubbed at extremities, short tears at spine). Provenance: Freeman C.S. Roper (bookplate) -- Thomas Edward Watson (bookplate; by descent to the present owners).

To appeal to a variety of tastes, Hardouin printed almost simultaneously editions with gothic or roman type, with or without printed borders. The present edition is in gothic type, with painted borders (not over a printed base), and with the metalcuts from his oval series. Lacombe 394.
