12° (122 x 62mm). Eight engraved vignettes, woodcut head- and tail-pieces. (Lacking frontispiece and last leaf [moral, table] both supplied in facsimile, scattered spotting, a few tears, some repaired, E1 with loss not affecting text, light soiling.) 19th-century calf (rubbed, front joint starting).

ONE OF FEW LIFETIME EDITIONS OF THESE FUNDAMENTAL TALES, and the fourth unauthorized edition of The Tales of Mother Goose (first published in 1697). All early editions are rare; the Catalogue Collectif de France and RLG record no copy. The tales comprise Sleeping Beauty, Little Red Riding Hood, Blue Beard, Puss in Boots, Diamonds and Toads, Cinderella, Riquet with the Tuft, and Tom Thumb. The dedication to 'Mademoiselle', the niece of Louis XIV, is signed P. Darmancour, Perrault's third son (1678-1700) whose contribution to this text is well documented. The ninth tale, written by Perrault's niece, was not added until 1729. Tchemerzine 9 180c ('Édition rarissime'); cf. En Français dans le texte 128.
