A LARGE COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION of the collected works of Politian, previously owned by the Basel printer, Nicolas Episcopius (Bischoff). Episcopius first worked as corrector at the press of Johann Froben before entering into partnership with Herwagen and Hieronymous Froben, the son of Johann, in 1529. The press reprinted the works of Politian in 1553, but the present copy does not seem to have been used by Episcopius in preparing his edition, more complete than the Aldine. Renouard (17:4) considered 'cette rare édition, l'une des plus belles qui soient sorties de l'imprimerie Aldine.' HC *13218; BMC V, 559 (IB. 24472-75); Polain(B) 3233; Goff P-886.
