4° (239 x 190mm). (Browned, small adhesion at top of B2r-C1r.) 19th-century quarter dark blue roan, spine lettered in gilt (flyleaf nearly detached, very slightly worn at extremities). Provenance: a few early annotations -- Bibliotheca Lindesiana (bookplate) -- Lionel and Philip Robinson (label recording gift to:) -- The Grolier Club, New York (deaccession stamp).

Prolific author and Independent minister, John Owen served as chaplain to the Irish expeditionary force in 1649 at the request of Oliver Cromwell, who also promoted him to later advisory roles. A leading proponent of high Calvinism, Owen served as dean of Christ Church, Oxford and regularly preached at Parliament.
