[TYNDALE, William 1494?-1536)]. The Practyse of Prelates. Whether the Kinges grace maye be separated from hys quene, be cause she was his brothers wife. 'Marborch' [Antwerp: Johannes Hoochstraten], 1530.
8° (144 x 92mm). Woodcut title-border. (Repair primarily to margins of first and last few leaves, tear at hinge of A1 affecting a few words, an occasional shoulder note shaved, light soiling.) 19th-century calf, blind triple fillet to sides, red morocco lettering-pieces to spine (rubbed, front joint starting). Provenance: Frederick Perkins (armorial bookplate; his sale, Sotheby's, 10-16 July 1889) -- Thomas Edward Watson (bookplate; by descent to the present owners).
FIRST EDITION of Tyndale's indictment of Henry VIII's project for divorce from Catherine and systematic attack on Wolsey's administration and the Roman hierarchy. Practyse, the word here also carrying its older meaning of 'trickery', was swiftly and severely suppressed. Those found distributing it were marched through the streets of London, forced to wear a copy tied around the neck with a sign saying 'I have sinned against the King's laws'. Because of its strident attack on prelacy, the book further antagonised Thomas More, who had already taken Tyndale to task in his Dialogue Concerning Heresies (1529). The remarks on Henry's divorce were removed from later editions. ESTCS 118806; Nijhoff & Kronenberg 3995; Cat. Antwerpen, Dissident Drukkerscentrum (1994) no. 11; STC 24465.
