YEATS, William Butler (1865-1939). Poems. London: T. Fisher Unwin, [1924].

8° (204 x 133mm). Portrait frontispiece, title printed in red and black. Publisher's dark tan sheep, spine and upper cover blocked in brown, upper cover with green highlights (extremities rubbed, front joint starting and chipped, spine chipped at foot). Provenance: Vincent Lloyd Russell (bookplate).

INSCRIBED BY YEATS, IN AN APPARENTLY UNRECORDED VARIANT BINDING, WITH 8 LINES OF VERSE from 'The Land of Heart's Desires': 'The wind blows out of the gates of the day, The wind blows over the lonely of heart, And the lonely of heart is withered away. But the faeries dance in a place apart, shaking their milk-white feet in a ring, Tossing their milk-white arms in the air; For they hear the wind laugh and murmur and sing, Of a land where even the old are fair (written in 1894) [signed] W.B. Yeats June 3 1926'. Wade does not record this binding, which varies significantly from the usual blue-green cloth with Althea Gyles's design. Wade notes that copies published during and after the war, when materials where scarce, continued using Gyles's design, but blocked in blind, rather than gold. The present copy discards Gyles's design and employs a more expensive binding material, suggesting that perhaps a number of copies were bound for a deluxe or gift issue. Cf. Wade 100.
