Engraved additional title, title in red and black with engraved vignette, 123 engraved plates including folding map of the Americas by Schagen, 31 double-page or folding views, 16 double-page maps, one folding and 69 half-page illustrations, 7 full-page portraits, engraved headpiece and woodcut initials and tailpieces, the double-page and folding plates on guards. (Title and frontispiece mounted, Maurice of Nassau portrait cut down and mounted, a few blank corners repaired, one plate slightly wrinkled, one or two leaves partly detached.) Contemporary Dutch blindstamped vellum, panelled sides with large arabesque lozenge at centre with initials HB, gilt spine with bird tool in compartments, red leather label in second, sprinkled edges (front hinge split, later endpapers). Provenance: Victor von Stedingk (bookplate, pencilled notes).

FINE, LARGE COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION OF A RICHLY ILLUSTRATED 'CLASSIC BOOK ON AMERICA' (Borba de Moraes). In contrast to later editions this copy includes early strong impressions of the plates, which illustrate the customs, festivals, occupations, religious rites and battles of the native Indians. The present copy has the portrait of Maurice of Nassau (not mentioned in the index) inserted, and it contains one of the first views of New Amsterdam, 'without any doubt, the handsomest, and ... the most agreeable view of Dutch New York' (Asher's Bibliographical Essay, p.23).
