Elizabeth, only daughter and heiress of Robert Foulkes, of Mountnessing, Essex, married, in 1615, Thomas Style (d.1637), of Wateringbury, Kent, grandson of Sir Humphrey Style (d.1557), of Langley, Kent. Her husband was created a Baronet in 1627. She died in 1650. Stylistically, and on the basis of the sitter's costume, this portrait would appear to date from circa 1620. The sitter's elevated social status is reflected in her very elaborate dress and pearls. The 'S' motif on her skirt seems to refer to her married name.
