The sitter, Sarah, was the daughter of Pryse Campbell of Cawdor (1727-1768), and Sarah (1726-1767), daughter and heir of Sir Edmund Bacon, the sixth baronet of Garboldisham, Norfolk. In 1745 Pryse Campbell was elected Member of Parliament for Inverness-shire, and with the support of the Earl of Bute he stood for and won the Nairnshire seat. In 1768 he was elected to the Cardigan borough, Wales.
In 1782, she married Thomas Wodehouse, a barrister who was the brother of Lord Wodehouse of Kimberley Hall, Norfolk. The present painting must date from between 1782 when Sarah became Mrs Wodehouse and 1792 when Sir Joshua Reynolds died. There is another portrait of her by Reynolds recorded under her maiden name of Campbell, and he also painted a full-length portrait of her brother John Campbell, 1st Baron Cawdor (1755-1821), probably in 1778. John Campbell followed his father into politics becoming the Member of Parliament for Nairnshire 1777-80 and for Cardigan borough from 1780-96.
