Lot Essay

A sporting and animal painter, John Frederick Herring became popular for his racing scenes, and depicted the winners of the Derby and the St. Leger for many years. Towards the end of his career Herring turned increasingly to farmyard genre scenes, such as the present works, which proved to be immensely popular.
