The legend of Robert Mondavi almost needs no introduction. Lest we forget, these are the wines that revolutionized not only the American wine industry, but also American's conception of what wine can be. Although it is fashionable of late to focus on single vineyard designate wines, it is important to note that Mondavi reserve wines are primarily sourced from one of the greatest Cabernet vineyards in the world: To-Kalon. Since the inaugural 1966 vintage, 1971 for the reserve, the original formula for finesse and elegance allowing early drinking; married with structure and balance to provide ageability has bent slightly with style and technological changes over five decades. There is, however, still no mistaking a Mondavi wine and this uniqueness is integral to its inherent collectability. The 1987 Reserve ranks as one of the outstanding examples of California Cabernet that I have consumed.
