1990 - LAST, BUT NOT LEAST OF THE FAMOUS TRIO
Indeed not least. Although a fabulous vintage in many of the world's wine regions, it is Bordeaux that has the lead the way for installing this great year in our memories. Michael Broadbent MW has, from the outset, given the vintage a 5 star rating and it remains a benchmark vintage today. Robert Parker gets straight to the point "if readers have the requisite discretionary income, and are willing to spend it on wine, I recommend buying as many 1990s as possible."
After tasting a number of 1990s recently, there can be no question that it was a truly great vintage. It needed to be in some ways, as a drought of good years were to follow, with 1991 - 1994 all being extremely difficult. Although 1990 was a record crop, the pricing was sensible and people, for a third year in a row happily stocked up. Buyers may be surprised to learn that although 1990 has turned out to be an outstanding vintage, it was, on its release approximately 10 cheaper than the previous year's 1989s. Here was a vintage that had it all, but was not over-hyped or over-priced, as is much the case today.
The extensive array of wines on offer here from the great 1990 vintage will provide buyers with endless drinking pleasure. Some ready now and some still with a long life in the cellar ahead, whatever your requirements you are sure to find it here. "The Lafite was still fairly deep. plummy coloured but maturing; bouquet evolving well; soft, fleshy, good length; complete - all that was need was time, more bottle age. Its unreadiness for drinking was demonstrated at a Lafite dinner with Eric de Rothschild at Brooks's in London. The roast grey partridge was unable to compete. Nevertheless, the penetratingly lovely bouquet and flavour were appreciated. Strange though how a wine so beguiling and easy in its youth can close up. Its second wind eagerly awaited.
