AUTOGRAPHS. A collection of letters and notes including: MONTAGU, Lady Mary Wortley (1689-1762). Autograph letter signed to 'Mrs' Anne Justice, n.p. [Thoresby], 7 April n.y. [1711], 3 pages, 8vo (traces of seal, browned, splits in margins and through central fold in 2nd leaf), and: SOUTHEY, Robert (1774-1843). Autograph fragment signed (with initials), 6 lines from a letter about an invitation; others by Wilhelm Tischbein [to Sir William Hamilton] referring to Etruscan vases; Samuel Crowther, Thomas Chalmers, Alphonse de Lamartine and his wife; by an unidentified correspondent to Lord Edward Fitzgerald on military matters (lacking last leaf); autograph notes by James Muirhead (editor of Baedecker's Guide to America); a forgery of a letter by Louis XVI, five other items (including one printed) and a few cut signatures including Colette and Stravinsky; altogether approximately 18 items (duststains, tears, some leaves worn).
Lady Mary Wortley Montagu (writing as Lady Mary Pierrepont, the year before her marriage) sends a gossipy letter to an early correspondent (daughter of a Yorkshire attorney), discussing the plans of a mutual acquaintance [Mary Banks], 'I wish Mrs B extreamly well, and hope she designs better for her selfe than a stolen wedding with a Man who (you know) we have reason to beleive [sic] is not the most Sincere Lover upon Earth', also mentioning the 'Great Lottery which is drawing ... My heart goes very much pit a pat about it, but I've a horrid bodeing Mind that tells me I shan't win a farthing'.
