Donne, Pope and 'Popery': a letter of 19 January 1877 quotes a passage from Donne's Second Satire which mocks Martin Luther's abbreviation of the Lord's Prayer, together with Pope's condensation of the same lines, with a reference to Donne's 'strong propensity to Popery': 'I daresay there are further illustations in Grosart's edition of Donne (dedicated to my unworth self) but I cannot refer to it at this moment', asking Stanley not to trouble to acknowledge 'what I fancied might save you from the pains of unshelving a book or two'. The remaining letters respond to invitations in the warmest terms. (3)
