CHRISTINA, Queen of Sweden (1632-1654). Letter signed (after her abdication, 'Christina Alessandra') to Francesco Solari (at Rome), Hamburg, 1 March 1662, in Italian, one page, 4to, address leaf (seal slits, slightly browned).
A letter to a member of her household, having learned of his approach to the cardinal and his claim, at which she is surprised as he knew her intention was not to continue the provision during her absence except for certain persons among whom he is not included. He must await her return to know the results of her gratitude and of the cardinal's reports.
Queen Christina's dramatic abdication took place at Uppsala in June 1654. Dressed in men's clothes and travelling under the name of Count Dohna, she abandoned the Lutheran faith, and was received into the Roman Catholic church at Innsbruck, taking the name of Alessandra. She arrived in Rome later in 1655. In 1660 she returned briefly to Sweden, but was not welcomed and the present letter was written on her journey back to Rome, when she spent a year at Hamburg. She received an allowance from Pope Alexander VII, who assigned Cardinal Azzolini to her to supervise her finances in Rome.
