SOUTHEY, Robert (1774-1843). Autograph letter signed to Charles Bowles Fripp, Keswick, 9 June 1834, enclosing on a separate leaf, signed, a memorial inscription to Joseph Butler DD (present), together 3 pages, 8vo (remnants of guards).

Southey sends a inscription to Bishop Joseph Butler in Bristol Cathedral, declaring himself not entirely satisfied, 'but as I can produce nothing more satisfactory within the limits to which the monument confines me, I send it such as it is', adding that 'it may be rejected altogether, without scruple, for anything better that can be procured'. The inscription itself praises Butler's theological work, for 'rendering philosophy subservient to faith, & finding in outward and visible things the type & evidence of those within the veil'. The recipient has added quotations from Ecclesiastes and Origen, to which Southey refers, to the integral blank.

Joseph Butler (1692-1752), who was Bishop first of Bristol and later of Durham, is best known for his Analogy of Religion, Natural and Revealed, to the Constitution and Course of Nature (1736). (2)
