THACKERAY, William Makepeace (1811-1863). Autograph letter signed to 'Miss Stanley', 36 Onslow Square, 10 March n.y., with a small sketch of a nun, one page, 8vo, on a bifolium (traces of paste to integral blank).

A charitable contribution. Thackeray has just refused to subscribe to a memorial to 'the late Mrs [Felicia] Hemans, a poetess who may rest very comfortably without any contribution from me to ornament her monument'; but this refusal, 'w[hic]h always gives me a twinge of something I won't call conscience' has reminded him 'how there are some live ladies who are doing a great deal of good'; he accordingly sends two pounds for 'your Sistern' (a sketch of a nun is annotated 'Black blue or gray you may fill in the colour'), with a promise of more the following year.
