FIRST EDITION OF THE EARLIEST CRITICAL STUDY OF HENRY JAMES. Understandably, James himself claimed to have no interest in reading it. Asked by Alfred Marshall how he felt about Hueffer's book, he remarked: "I am vaguely aware that his book is out, but he has at least had the tact not to send it to me, and as I wouldn't touch it with a ten-foot pole nothing is simpler than for it not to exist for me" (Edel, Henry James: The Master, 1972, p. 434). Harvey A44.
