WITH AN ENVELOPE ADDRESSED TO HUEFFER BY HENRY JAMES pasted on the rear endpaper. The envelope is stamped "Rye 9.15AM, SP 10 02", and addressed to: "Ford Madox Hueffer, Esq., The Bungalow, Winchelsea."
FIRST ENGLISH EDITION. Hueffer is believed to have been the model for Morton Densher, the central male character in The Wings of the Dove, making this a most important association copy. The Constable edition was published on 30 August, preceded by the American edition, published in two volumes by Charles Scribner's Sons on 21 August. Edel & Laurence A56
