FIRST EDITION. Wells's unsentimental depiction of the English lower middle classes was warmly praised by both Conrad and James. Film versions of this story of a draper's assistant who inherits a fortune were made in 1920 and 1941. It was adapted for the stage in 1912, and a musical version, Half a Sixpence, was produced in Britain and America during the 1960's. Wells Society 26.
