Wood-engraved illustrations and decorations by Charles Ricketts and Charles Shannon (some very light browning and mainly marginal dust-soiling). Original decorated vellum gilt designed by Charles Ricketts (a little bowed). Provenance: Geoffrey [?]Ecroyd (armorial bookplate and shelf label). ONE OF 220 COPIES. Although the colophon states the book was "begun at the Vale", The Vale Press proper was not founded until 1896. Hero and Leander is, however, very much a precursor of the press's style and illustration. See Tomkinson p.163.
