Paris: Jacques du Puys, 1577. 2° (322 x 210mm), ruled in red, large woodcut device on title, three 10-line woodcut initials and several smaller ones in text, ornamental head-pieces at the beginning of each book (lacks the final blank, lightly browned). Early 19th-century mottled sheep, spine gilt in compartments, red morocco spine label (lightly worn). Provenance: an armorial engraved bookplate mounted on the blank verso of the third leaf. Second edition of 'the first modern attempt to create a complete system of political science. Its basis was the Politics of Aristotle, and it was through Bodin that Aristotle's work came to exercise the influence on modern political thinking which has made him the father of modern democracy', PMM 94a; Adams B2234; Tchemerzine II, 209.
