LANGLAND, William (c.1330-1400). The vision of Pierce Plowman. London: Owen Rogers, 1561. 4° (181 x 131mm). (Lacking 18 leaves at the end containing the end of the Vision and the Crede, several headlines shaved, a few lost, title very lightly soiled.) Early 20th-century mottled calf gilt, sprinkled edges. Provenance: Edw. Browne, April 29 1687 (title inscription with note on text) -- Thomas Edward Watson (bookplate; by descent to the present owners). Fourth Edition. 'The Crede of Pierce Plowman' [second edition], which is referred to in the title, is usually lacking as here 'probably due to contemporary proscription because of its Wycliffite doctrine' (Pforzheimer, p.823). Only 'about a half-dozen copies have survived' (ibid.). STC 19908; Pforzheimer 799 (without the Crede).
