Most existing examples, including the ones offered here, date from the mid 18th century. While there is some question as to their original use it does seem certain that they are associated with tea as they are often found as part of tea equipage. Ian Pickford suggests in his book Silver Flatware English, Irish and Scottish 1660-1980, that the mote spoon served the same purpose in the 18th century that the caddy spoon did later in that century in into the 19th century, being used to remove tea leaves from a caddy. The pierced bowl would allow the dust to be separated from the larger leaves and the long handle could be used to remove blockages from the spout of the teapot.
