A WILLIAM IV SILVER SOUP TUREEN AND COVER
MARK OF G. R. COLLIS & CO., BIRMINGHAM, 1835
Of fluted oval section, engraved on each side with a presentation inscription, with two grape, vine and leaf motifs handles, supported on four leaf motif feet, the detachable cover with a grape vine and leaf handle - 16in. (40.6cm.) long, 100oz.
The inscriptions read: 'This Service of Plate was presented to JOHN BIRT DAVIES, M.D. (EDIN.) EXTRA LICENTIATE OF THE ROYAL COLLEGE OF PHYSICIANS PROFESSOR OF FORENSIC MEDICINE IN THE ROYAL SCHOOL OF MEDICINE and SURGERY AND SENIOR PHYSICIAN OF THE GENERAL DISPENSARY BIRMINGHAM ON THE 1ST DAY OF AUGUST MDCCCXXXVI by certain Subscribers to the General Hospital and others Inhabitants of the Town and neighbourhood of Birmingham.'
The second inscription reads: 'AS A LASTING MEMORIAL OF THE SENSE GENERALLY ENTERTAINED OF HIS PROFESSIONAL SKILL OF HIS ACTIVE BENEVOLENCE AND CHARITABLE EXERTIONS IN THE CAPACITY OF PHYSICIAN TO THE BIRMINGHAM DISPENSARY, AND TO THE LATE BIRMINGHAM FEVER HOSPITAL AND OF HIS KIND SYMPATHIES AND ZEALOUS ATTENTION DURING A PERIOD OF XIII YEARS TOWARDS NUMEROUS POOR PATIENTS, WHO HAVE SOUGHT AND RECEIVED HIS GATUITOUS AID AND LIKEWISE AS A TESTIMONY OF REGRET AT THE RECENT DISAPPOINTMENT OF HIS JUST CLAIMS TO THE OFFICE OF PHYSICIAN TO THE GENERAL HOSPITAL'

A similar tureen dated 1837 presented to Robert Stephenson from the collection of the Birmingham Assay office was exhibited at Goldsmiths' Hall, Matthew Boulton and the Toymakers Silver From the Birmingham Assay Office, 1982 and illustrated as number 179 in the exhibition catalogue.
