Lot Essay

This design was used by many silversmiths, including Paul de Lamerie; a set of four virtually identical salts by him, from the collection of the Right Honourable The Earl Spencer, were exhibited in Paul de Lamerie: The Work of England's Master Silversmith (1688-1751) at Goldsmiths' Hall in 1990 and one of the set is illustrated on page 107 of the exhibition catalogue.

Another set of four, by Paul Crespin, were sold in these rooms, 13 March 2001, lot 226.
