There have been at least two dispersals of plate from the collection of the Dukes of Beaufort, the first following the death of the 4th Duke in 1756 when a selection was offered by the trustees at a sale held by a Mr. Prestage at his Great Rooms at the end of Savile Row, see for example a George II silver-gilt ewer and basin, Christie's London, 17 March 1999, lot 109. In the 1756 sale that lot was purchased back by the trustees on the behalf of the infant 5th Duke and finally sold, along with other plate, including the present dishes, by order of 8th Duke at Christie's, 13 June 1895.

A similar pair from the same service and also by Cripps, 1759, were sold Christie's New York, 20 April 2000, lot 254.
