Lot Essay

William, 5th Viscount Howe (1729-1814), was the younger brother of the famous Richard, 1st Earl Howe whose victory at the Glorious First of June eclipsed his siblings promising army career. During the American War of Independence (1775-83) he served with distinction under General Wolfe and rose to Commander-in-Chief. As such, and with the naval support of his brother, he captured Brooklyn, New York and Washington in 1776. He was never able to repeat these glories and his career petered out after the 1778 failure at Valley Forge where he was superseded in command.
