The Great Martyr Saint George the Victorious, on horseback, striking down the dragon, the saint depicted in rich armour and with a lance, the rescued youth seated behind him, and princess Elisaba holding the dragon with her belt, the blessing hand emerging from a segment of a circle at the top right-hand corner of the icon, in a rocky landscape - signed lower left - 37½ x 29 in. (95 x 74 cm.).

Lot Essay

The exact origin of the artist is unknown, however his works can be found in museums and collections in Greece, Italy, Patmos, Mount Sinai, England and Russia. He always signed his works only with the first name. He painted with great virtuosity and in conservative manner.
