The Silver Wraith was the last model supplied in chassis-only form, and so is often considered by many traditionalists to be "the last real Rolls-Royce." Based on this chassis, the remaining coachbuilders were thus still able to cater to the market for large and luxuriously equipped motorcars, many still chauffeur-driven. The firms of H.J. Mulliner, Hooper, Park Ward and Freestone and Webb bodied some 1,700 cars during the model's twelve year production run (between 1947 and 1959). Hooper and Co., one of England's oldest coachbuilders, built many bodies on the Silver Wraith chassis and a number of the earlier cars were completed to a popular Touring Limousine design that they named the 'Teviot', and was designated number 8098.

WGC 44 was sold new through Franco Britannic Automobiles of Levallois-Perret, Paris to Monsieur G. Alonso Trigoyen of the Hotel Plaza Athenée, Paris, as noted on its factory build sheets, with a delivery date of 31st March 1950. These also record the fitting of Ace silent discs, locks to the bonnet and petrol filler, a speedometer in kilometers, export bumpers and an extension speaker to the radio.

Beyond its original delivery Christie's has not been able to ascertain any further history of the car, which will remain an intriguing task for the purchaser. We do however know that the car has been with its present owner for more than half its life since at least 1973 as recorded in its log book. In recent times, the car has been stored and received very little attention.

At the time of cataloguing the car has not be inspected by a Christie's specialist and therefore we are not able to provide comment on its condition cosmetically or mechanically.
Special notice
No VAT will be charged on the hammer price, but VAT at 17.5% will be added to the buyer's premium, which is invoiced on a VAT inclusive basis.
