Overlooking a wonderful garden in the Baroque style, the house was designed by Sir Reginald Blomfield A.R.A., and built in 1908-1909. The present owner's grandfather purchased Moundsmere, sight unseen, in 1932 while in America. Redolent of the confidence of Pre-War England, the design of the house was inspired by Sir Christopher Wren's central facade at Hampton Court Palace, and was influenced by the strong and masculine Palladian style, which Blomfield honoured. The architect's achievement of conveying unity and gravity through Palladian elements such as richly decorated yet tastefully placed swags, festoons and pilasters, is remarkable. Both, commissioner and architect agreed to leave aside academic correctness in favour of modern modifications and the demand for convenience, comfort and practicality for the inhabitants. One senses the generosity of the architecture when walking through the front entrance of Moundsmere Manor, which is located on the north facade of the house. The classical portico is the first introduction to the country house and its furnishings, with a Rococo-revival hall lantern (lot 1001) hanging above a cast-iron walking stick stand (lot 1003) and rustic oak elbow chairs in the Jacobean manner (lot 1020). The visitor is then lead into the Hall where furniture has been chosen not to overcrowd the architecture, so that the longcase clock (lot 1014) and the Old Master pictures including a late 17th Century Kneller portrait (lots 1028) sit happily next to Colefax & Fowler covered armchairs and matching curtains (lots 1082-1084). The Hall invites the visitor to enter three rooms, all of which overlook the Baroque-style garden: the Dining Room, the Sitting Room and the Library. Among the highlights in the Dining Room are the Edwardian cut glass six branch chandelier (lot 1108) and the unusual William IV mahogany jardiniere (lot 1064) placed beneath heavy red linen and green velvet curtains (lot 1078). In the Sitting Room furniture ranges from an Italian marquetry commode (lot 1089), several finely carved gilt-wood side tables (lots 1090-1092) and a pair of George II mirrors, originally designed for Culloden House, Inverness. Old Master pictures adorn the walls (lots 1111-1114), and Colefax & Fowler curtains frame the view over the garden (lot 1067). The library offers the comfort expected from a country house study, where the fireplace and its furniture dominates the room (lots 1142-1160). The shelves are filled with rows of leather-bound books (lots 1160A-1168), while hunting prints, paraphernalia and fox's brushes decorate the walls and side tables (lots 1120-1123 and 1133-1141). The east wing of the house contains the servants quarters, covering almost as large an area as the family rooms. The Kitchen and servant's rooms are filled with 19th Century copperware (lots 1143-1148), picnic baskets and fire buckets (1205-1207), European and Oriental porcelain and glass (lots 1183-1197), charming watercolours (lots 1227-1235) and furniture including rustic benches, a specimen cabinet and a Victorian pine feed store and pull cart (lots 1199-1210). An interest in sailing was passed through the generations, and early 20th Century sailing photographs of Britannia, Candida and Cecily (most of which are signed and dated by Beken & Son, Cowes, lots 1211 - 1216) are included in this collection. The evocative atmosphere of Moundsmere will be re-created in the South Kensington salerooms with its unique accumulation of traditional and whimsical objects, paintings and furniture in the taste and tradition of the present owner.
