Lot Essay

The serpentined table, supporting the Italian marble slab with moulded brass border, has its antique-fluted frieze embellished with a Palmyreen-sunflowered tablet and reflects the Roman fashion promoted in the 1760s by the court architect Robert Adam (d.1792). While the truss-scrolled and acanthus-enriched legs reflect the French fashion popularised in the 1740s by pattern-books such as Matthias Lock's Six Tables, 1746.
