Lot Essay

The Charles II-style iron andirons are concealed behind golden brass medallions, which are filigreed with flower pots in the Louis Quatorze Roman fashion. The pattern is taken from the celebrated Haddon Hall andirons, which were engraved in Richard Bridgens' Furniture with Candelabra and Interior Decoration, 1838 (F. Lenygon, Decoration in England, 1914, 2nd ed. 1927, fig 258 and K. H Mantell, Haddon Hall, Derby, 1987, p.15). Another pair are illustrated in R. Gentle and R. Field, English Domestic Brass, London, 1975, fig.139).
